Ep. 24: Heidi’s Monk Quilt

Which kind of quilt would you like to share with us?
A quilt with appliqué. The motif is a monk which I have photographed at an exhibition. I made it for myself.

When did you start and how long did it take to complete?
September to December 2017 – 3 months.

What were the challenges and what do you like best about it?
I really like the face and the wall. The quilt was a real challenge, especially the face. The forest was too dark at first, so I had to start it all over again. Finding the right proportions was difficult. The whole project was a lot of fun!

How long have you been making patchwork got you into it?
I’ve been sewing my own clothes for 40 years and started making patchwork for 5 years. Key moment was the visit of an exhibition in the textile museum St. Gallen.

What experience in your time as a quilter has touched you the most?
You can achieve anything with patience and perseverance.

Do you have any good advice for beginners?
Rigour and patience are the most important things when quilting.

Freya (bottom) I did in Isabel’s course Finding the Perfect Form at C & C. Ebba and Ebbelina (top) for me because it’s fun!

When did you start sewing and how long did it take to finish?
There are a total of about three full days working time behind it – that’s about 2-3 months per quilt, with interruptions .

What do you like most about it?
The work has been a lot of fun and it has become pretty and cheerful quilts

What kind of materials did you use?
Flower fabrics in many variations, a lot by Kaffe Fassett, which I had wished for in my birthday group.

Ep. 22: Sofka’s Helvetia (EN)

What kind of quilt would you like to share with us?
A wall quilt in the mixture of Paper Piecing, application and normal patchwork technique.

For whom and why did you make this quilt?
I had made it for a Bernina contest with the theme ‘Red & White’.
I had immediately think about a Swiss theme, because the colors fit as well as Bernina is a Swiss company. So I chose Helvetia, as it is pictured on the back of the second franc piece.

vergleich

When did you start and how long did it take to complete?
I had started in February 2016 and finished the wallquilt by the end of August 2016. It was a challenge for me and I wanted to quit a few times. But I persevered 🙂 Some parts I sewed by hand, because I did not know how to do it better with the PP method and I had never made something that way before.

helvetia4

What do you like most about this quilt?
The idea and the motive. That I finished it and did not give up.
Today my Helvetia hangs in the hallway and I delight myself every day when I see her. Even if the quilt is not perfect, I learned a lot from making it.

What kind of materials did you use?
For this I used the fabrics of Robert Kaufman. Kona Cotton Rich Red and Kona Cotton White.

I made a baby quilt 5 years ago as a gift. I was immediately addicted and wanted to learn more about patchwork and quilting.

It’s always a new experience to try things our. The quilting in general is very diverse and fascinating. You always find new ideas.

Row by Row Experience 2017

We are proud to participate in the #rowbyrowexperience . Collect our unique Basel, Switzerland pattern at our shop for free if you participate in the challenge!

Row by Row Socials

Welcome to Basel Switzerland! Basel lies in the heart of Europe, on both banks of the Rhine. The city is the center of the idyllic border triangle of France, Germany and Switzerland.

Customers come to our shop from all over the world. We are well known for our nice selection of beautiful fabrics, lots of notions and of course our friendly atmosphere.

Our Row by Row quilt block is part of the 2017 ‘On the Go’ theme. It reflects the Rhein (Rhine) river with the ancient buildings at the river sides. In the background you can see the cathedral of Basel (known locally as the Münster).

The Bridge over the Rhine was for many centuries very important as the only permanent bridge over the river between Lake Constance and the sea.

Nowadays, large tour boats leave from Basel and show people the magnificent landscape and historic sites along the river up to the Netherlands.

We are looking forward to meet you and hear your stories, when you visit our shop 🙂

Ep. 21: Martina’s House Patchwork

What kind of quilt would you like to share with us?
A wall hanging. I did it for my family and myself. I was inspired by the book “Häuser-Patchwork” by Bernadette Mayr.

When did you start and how long did it take to complete?
I started in February 2015 and finished quilting (by hand) in the end of December 2016. I started with all the windows and continued with the red of the houses. Then there was a long pause, because I was not sure how to do the blue background should look and whether I should still make a green lawn in front of the houses.

What do you like most about this quilt?
Everything! The houses, the pines, the color of the sky. I would’t change anything about it.

What kind of materials did you use?
Blue, red and green fabrics, slightly patterned. Black and white uni fabrics. Some rests from other projects, as well as new ones from Cotton & Color.

How long have you been patchwork and who or what moved you to start?
Since 2003. As a child and adolescent I always did a lot of sewing, knitting and crochet. With the sewing of quilts, I can be very creatively and play with the colors, there are so many beautiful fabrics. I have more and more ideas than time to implement them!

What experience in your time as a quilter has touched you the most?
I have the best ideas when I’m on the road and see something, usually some color combination. That is why a little notebook is my constant companion.

Do you have a good advice for beginners?
If you are not 100% convinced by an idea, it is worth taking a break, even if it takes several weeks or months.

What kind of quilt would you like to share with us?
The portrait of a woman with a child’s blanket.

I made this quilt for a competition last year. The motto was “How would it look if your favorite artist had made patchwork?” My favorite artist is Modigliani.

When did you start and how long did it take to complete?
The sketch went relatively fast, the realization has taken more than 3 months.

What do you like most about this quilt?
I really like everything about it. If I had to sew the quilt again, I would align the background material in the vertical rather than the horizontal so that it reminds more of a fence.

What kind of materials did you use?
First of all cotton fabrics and relaxed linen to convey the impression of a real canvas as well as possible.

Raverbag – a gym bag for young and old

Dear quilter

You know the problem: You want to treat your son, daughter, granddaughter, godchild, niece nephew with a present. This should at best be personal and joyful, but at the same time not too costly. A quilt is a beautiful gift, but is very elaborate and needs to be handled with care …

How about a practical and quickly sewn gym bag, which ?

img_2741

My son Tim (27) has been sewing bags, which he calls ‘Raverbags’, for himself and his friends for years. They take them to music festivals (hence the name) in the summer, where they store their provisions, sun and weather protection. These became so popular that he began to sell the patterns in my shop.

Meanwhile, the pattern was further developed and now you can now configure and order complete kits online. On the specially crafted webshop raverbag.com you can choose from the entire range of Cotton & Color’s cotton fabrics to find a suitable motif. You can immediately see how the final result will look like. I find the button ‘random fabric’ especially great, which can lead to unforeseen and inspiring results!

14727602_880428638755529_3581360403914948608_n

The kit will be sent to you with fabric, instructions and cord, completely free of charge, and is sewn in 1-2 hours, depending on your experience. It also makes a great project for students and beginners!
Other examples can be found below, as well as on Facebook and Instagram. If you want to share your creation with us, send us an email or use the hashtag #raverbag.

I’m curious how your Raverbag turns out!

Ep. 17: Susanne’s Four Elements

What kind of quilt would you like to share with us?
Four Elements Quilt – la passacaglia – English paper piecing

For whom and why did you make this quilt?
For me, because to give away such a quilt, after all that hand work, is still very difficult for me at the moment. It is ALL sewn by hand and also quilted by hand. Why, yes, my family members also ask themselves. How can one be spending HOURS at sewing?
But I find it almost meditative. But the most wonderful thing about making this quilt, was the choice of colors for the respective rosettes. A challenge was to make the color transitions as harmonious as possible.

When did you start and how long did it take to complete?
November 2014 – March 2016

What do you like most about this quilt?
The colors !!!

What kind of materials did you use?
Many batik materials and a lot of residual patchwork materials

4-elemente-la-passacaglia-decke-2016-von-susanne-stadler-rossru%cc%88ti-3
How long have you been quilting and what got you into it?
I spontaneously joined a sewing group in 2011 and learned out of curiosity how to make patchwork. To learn new techniques on an afternoon every 2 weeks was my goal. I didn’t just sew a few practice pads, but I decided to sew a whole blanket. I was so preoccupied that I had finished my first blanket with various techniques quickly. Afterwards, I learned something new, just clicked on the Internet and tried it out. I gave away a lot in form of gifts … pillows, aprons and much more. Until I had no more ideas of what to sew next for whom.
Now I sell my creations via my homepage: www.quiltbox.ch.

What experience in your time as a quilter has touched you the most?
Only if you work accurately and precisely, you get a piece that gives you joy.

Do you have a good advice for beginners?
Patience, perseverance and PRECISION.
